Jumping to the heartbeat

April 6, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

In honor of American Heart Month, students of Central Boulevard and Charles Campagne elementary schools in the Bethpage Union Free School District participated in the American Heart Association’s annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.

According to the AHA’s website, Jump Rope for Heart assists in the battle against heart disease and stroke by promoting physical activity, heart healthy living and community service.

Divided into groups during their gym classes, students exercised their heart muscles by jumping rope to popular pop music. They also hula-hooped, played basketball and learned about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, all while raising money for the community.

Collectively, the two schools raised more than $7,000 to assist in heart disease research.

Ward Melville HS students work to raise funds

April 5, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Ward Melville High School juniors Jillian Bove and Ally Szema spearheaded a fun-filled badminton tournament this March that helped to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The event was sponsored by the school’s HOSA club sponsored in Jillian and Ally’s name, with all donations the tournament benefiting their team 3vforacure. Also in attendance was special guest, Brandon Bloom, who attends Arrowhead and is a survivor. Brandon welcomed all 21 teams to the event with his family in the opening remarks.

The team and HOSA are hard at work raising awareness for all blood cancers in the hopes of raising $50,000 in seven short weeks for a great cause as part of the Students of the Year initiative. Students throughout the nation are nominated to participate in a fundraising competition to benefit the society’s mission, and the team that raises the most money by the awards celebration on April 26 will be named “Student(s) of the Year.”

There is still time to donate, with the late April deadline approaching. For more information, or to help the cause, please visit http://events.lls.org/li/longislandSOY2018/t3vforacur.

Heart-healthy hoopsters at Copiague Middle School

March 29, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

To benefit the American Heart Association and learn about the effects of heart disease, students at Copiague Middle School participated in a Hoops for Heart fundraiser to raise money for the organization on March 23 and 26 during their physical education classes.

During a basketball-themed obstacle course, students were timed as they raced through the different stations. Students recorded their time on a poster for the different classes to attempt to beat. The Copiague Middle School students are hoping to meet or exceed their goal of $5,000 raised during last year’s event.

Not only did students help raise money for a good cause, they learned about leading a heart-healthy lifestyle and making positive choices. Hoops for Heart is a national fundraising program sponsored jointly by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of America and the AHA. Through the program, students raise funds for the AHA while participating in activities that promote physical fitness.
